How do I Attach My Own Images to My Listings?

Listings accompanied by bookseller-supplied images are more likely to sell than listings without. Bookseller-supplied images also reduce customer complaints, as buyers see the book they are ordering in advance. AbeBooks adds stock images for ISBN books, when available, but bookseller-supplied images greatly enhance the shopping experience for customers.

There are three ways to provide your own images: Via the [My Account] page; by FTPS (file transfer protocol secure); and by including image URLs within inventory upload files.

  • Ensure your pictures are in focus and bright.
  • You can provide up to five images for each listing and you can define the main image if you upload multiple images to accompany a book.
  • Each image can be up to 4MB in size. There is no pixel size limitation. AbeBooks will resize the image after you upload it.
  • Images can be either GIF or JPG format. No other formats are accepted. JPG images must be saved in RGB format, not CMYK.
  • AbeBooks accepts image URLs (e.g. from photo sharing sites like Flickr, Photobucket and Dropbox). URLs from Amazon or other sites where you are unlikely to hold the image copyright are not permitted and will be blocked upon upload.
  • It takes between 6 and 24 hours for an uploaded image to appear on our sites.

Follow these instructions to upload via [My Account]:

  1. Click [Manage My Books & Images] beneath ‘My Books’.
  2. Search for the book that you wish to add images to, or leave the fields blank and click on [View Items] to display your entire inventory.
  3. Thumbnails of existing images and/or stock images added to your listings by AbeBooks will display on the left. To upload or edit an image or images, click [Update Images] for the listing in question.
  4. You now have the choice of uploading an image from your computer or providing the URL to the image. Click [Browse for file] to upload an image from your computer OR Click [Add Image from URL] to enter a URL.
  5. When you have added your image(s), click [Upload Image(s)] and the upload process will begin. Large images will take longer to upload.

Follow these guidelines to upload images via FTPS:

Images uploaded by FTPS must be named to correspond with the book ID of the listing with which it is to be associated, i.e. image 1234.jpg will be associated with the listing for vendor book ID 1234.

If uploading multiple images for a single listing, each image must still be named to correspond with the book ID of the listing and also be appended with a numerical suffix to differentiate each one.

For example, multiple images for book ID 1234 would be named as follows:

1234_1.jpg or1234.jpg

The first will be the main image and can be named either 1234_1.jpg or 1234.jpg. If images with both names are uploaded, the one with the suffix _1 will be used.

Rather than send each photo individually, you can also compress several photos into one file and upload the zipped file through [Upload a Book or Picture File], located beneath ‘My Books’ on your [My Account] page.

When using FTPS software, you will be prompted to enter your AbeBooks User ID and password, if they have not already been entered and saved. Ensure your FTP software supports FTP Secure and adjust your settings so that all uploads are sent via FTPS. Learn more about uploading files via FTPS.

Follow these guidelines to upload images via third-party inventory management tools:

Some inventory management tools support the use of image URLs within your book records. You can use this method to send your images to AbeBooks as well, but contact Customer Support before doing so. We will need to ensure your account is correctly configured to receive and process image URLS.

If you need to remove a previously-uploaded image from a listing:

  1. Go to ‘My Account’ and click [Manage My Books & Images] beneath ‘My Books’.
  2. Search for the book that you wish to remove images from, or leave the fields blank and click on [View Items] to display your entire inventory.
  3. Once you’ve located the listing, click [Update Images].
  4. Click [Remove Image] for the image(s) you wish to delete.

Note that once removed from your listing, the image will be deleted from our database. To restore the image, you will need to upload it again (see above).
